Union Awards 2019 

Awards & Criteria

 

There are two types of awards at the Union Awards. Firstly, there are awards with students nominate who they think meets the criteria and deserves the award. A panel will then decide who is shortlisted, and who wins the award.  The other is where groups or individuals meet the criteria and are automatically put forward to the panel who will then shortlist and select the winner.

 

 

Student Nominated Awards

 

Spirit of the Union

The 'Spirit of the Union' Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated they live the values of the Union: Integrity, Inclusivity, Positivity, Student Focused & Empowering. They'll be highly engaged in the work of the Union and have consistently demonstrated their commitment to it.

 

Student Impact Award

This Award is given to an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a real imact on the student experience and who has made a lasting impact on students here at South Bank.

 

RAG Award

This award goes to the Raising and Giving project, a series of activities, that either engaged the most students, had the most impact or raised the most amount money for the nominated charity. You can nominate any project/event run by a single student or student group, a RAG team, a Sport or Society or through a University department.

 

Event of the Year

This award goes to the LSBU student led event that engaged students the most and had the greatest impact. This award is open to events that occur on and off campus. You can nominate any event run by a single student or student group, RAG team, Sport club or Society.

 

Society Recognition

This award is given to the society that has made a great and lasting impact this year. It highlights groups that have done something exceptional, shown the greatest improvement on the previous year or a new society that has achieved successes on the same level as an established society. 

 

Sports team recognition

The Sports Team Recognition award is for the team who has achieved the most throughout the year. This could be a team who have won their league, who have won a competition/ tournament, or have travelled the greatest distance in terms of progress as a team.

 

Individual Award for Contribution to Societies

Societies are full of students volunteering their time to grow and support communities at LSBU, these students are tireless in their commitments and attitude. This award is for that student, that one that has gone above and beyond this group. They have been hugely influential within their society and LSBSU, they have made LSBU a better place to be part of and are a credit to South Bank students. 

 

Individual Award for Contribution to Sports

This award is for the person who has given the most to sports, run through the Union this year. They may have played for numerous sports, been on the committee for a number of sports, or helped with sports campaigns to benefit current and future students. 

 

Coach Recognition

Awarded to the coach who has gone the extra mile for the team(s) they coach. They have been heavily engaged with the team(s), both during training and fixtures, and beyond. They have demonstrated their commitment to the team, club, the SU and the university. They have done their best to develop the team(s) and the individuals within. 

 

Society Support Champion

Celebrating our societies cannot be complete without acknowledging those that support and help societies but are not students themselves. These people help enrich society offering, they bring levels of experience and knowledge that ensures the society is successful. 

 

Sports Person

The Sports Person of the Year Award can be given to a maximum of 3 students per year. One Female, one Male and one Non-Binary. This is for the person (in each category) who has achieved the most in their given sport - for example highest goal scorer in their league, won a competition (Regional, National or International), been selected for a National squad. 

 

Committee of the Year

This award is for the committee who have shown consistent commitment to the SU and to their members. They have been in constant contact with the SU and have run a number of engaging events/ sessions for their members. They embody the values of the Union and wish to develop their group year on year.

 

 


 

Straight to Panel Awards

 

Volunteer of the Year

This award is given to an individual student who has given above and beyond expectations over the previous academic year. The winner’s qualities will include their commitment, enthusiasm and positivity, promoting volunteering and logging numerous volunteering hours. This award is open to students independently as a volunteer or as part of student activity group e.g club committee member, Forum Chair etc.

 

Society of the Year 

Society of the Year is awarded based on the following criteria also listed in STARS. This award is to specifically encourage active committees and members to work towards developing their club throughout the year. Retention and possibly an increase in membership numbers compared to the previous academic year. Evidence of working with a wider community beyond just current members e.g. other societies, sports teams, and the local community. Successful completion of a detailed, relevant and realistic Development Plan. Undertaking a RAG activity to fundraise for either their club or a chosen charity. Evidence of commitment through attending Societies Forums and logging volunteer hours. Effective promotion of the society via attendance at Freshers & Refreshers Fair, an updated LSBSU web page and active social media channels. Contribution to Students’ Union/ University campaigns e.g. Black History Month, LGBT History Month, #DoesYouGood etc.

 

Sports Club of the Year

This award will be based on the STARS score and the justification given for their score. This award is to specifically encourage active committees and members to work towards developing their club throughout the year. Retention and possibly an increase in membership numbers compared to the previous academic year. Evidence of working with a wider community beyond just current members e.g. other sports clubs, societies, and the local community. Successful completion of a detailed, relevant and realistic Development Plan. Undertaking a RAG activity to fundraise for either their club or a chosen charity. Evidence of commitment through attending Sports Forums and logging volunteer hours. Effective promotion of the sports club via attendance at Freshers & Refreshers Fair, an updated LSBSU web page and active social media channels. Contribution to Students’ Union/ University campaigns e.g. Black History Month, LGBT History Month, #DoesYouGood etc.
